Unit 8: Week 1

Image
23/03/26 - 27/03/26 Before I properly start unit, I need to figure out where my head is at. What kind of songs do I want to write? where will the songwriting come from?  Let me look at some songs and see what influences I can find 1 Pneuma - Tool This is the song that started my addiction to this band. What an incredible song with some unconventional time signatures and powerful dynamics. The song is about transcendence from ones physical being and ascending to a higher being. The spacial themes in this song really make you feel like you're in a strange place and the dynamics are just incredible during the build up. Danny Carrey the drummer uses a circle of fifths which transitions to a circle of fourths and then finally thirds. The drum signature is in 33/8 which is broken down into more smaller, manageable sections like 6/8, 6/8, 5/8, 6/8, 5/8, 5/8. The whole band contributes to the driving force that is the buildup of the song and couldn't have executed it better. The dyn...

L3 Unit 5 and 6 Evaluation

This unit was probably the biggest challenge for me. I had to write a song, (which my band already did for our performance units) Rehearse it, record it in the studio, mix and EQ the song, then using the most frustrating and confusing software, shoot and create a music video for the song itself. It has taken a good while, but I am pleased with the end result. Writing and Mixing  Writing the song a couple of months ago was fantastic, I was happy with how we performed it on stage and we have also sped the song up to around 150BPM. Making it in the studio was enjoyable as well but for future studio sessions, I would probably want a live in studio version as it would be far easier to mix. I cannot wait to bring songs like Corrosion of the mind and our self titled track into the studio. Mixing the song was fun in parts, I did better than I thought I would but I am confident that my other bandmates have made better mixes and music videos.  Shooting and making the music video...

L3 Unit 7: Podcast Evaluation

I was tasked to create a podcast centred around my own personal practise and something that I can speak about given my style and genre. The topic of my podcast is all about different guitar techniques used in thrash metal and how I have applied them to my own personal practise and riffs. All of these guitars played in the podcast are played by me and I tend to follow a process: Explain technique, provide example of technique, and Show where I have used the technique myself.  It was really nice to create a podcast, It is not something I ever saw myself doing. I enjoyed providing examples for certain techniques and being able to show off my own riffs in this podcast. What matters to me is being able to create something, and putting some personal creations in the podcast made it feel a lot more special to me. Although I think this went well, I still would have done a couple of things differently. I would have spend more time on my ident and made it sound like I had put more effort int...

L3 Unit 5 & 6

This will be my on going diary for units 5 and 6 dedicated to the creation, recording, and mixing of my music video.   For this assignment, I need to write a song, record it in logic, mix it, record a music video, edit the music video, and release it on YouTube. The song that my band have chosen to recording a music video for is "Take it to your Grave" which is a song about the character named "Conquest" from the comic book TV adaptation "Invincible". In the season 3 finale, Invincible faces planet Viltrums most feared warrior "Conquest" who batters invincible from pillar to post. During the fight, Conquest opens up to our hero and discusses his feelings of loneliness and isolation from his own race and how he doesn't even get his own name, only a purpose. He tells Invincible "Take it to your Grave" and tries to kill him. I thought Conquest would make a fantastic theme for a song so I wrote Take it to your grave about him I wrote th...

L3 UNIT 7: Podcast Research

Image
Week 1 For my podcast research I'm going to research and discuss the history between two of my biggest influences - Metallica and Megadeth and research the techniques they have used in their music and how I have used it in my own personal practice. I will title it after one of their songs like "Holy Wars" or "Master of Podcasts" or something like that.  Danish drummer Lars Ulrich and Guitarist James Hetfield started a band along with bassist Ron Mcgovney named "Metallica". Mustaine sees an ad in the newspaper about a metal band looking for guitarist and he gets the job by only warming up on his guitar.  Week 2 To fully understand the topic of my podcast, I must learn about the history of Metallica and Megadeth and how they helped pave the way for thrash metal .  My research is loosely coming from a YouTube video where someone gathers loads of clips from people in Metallica and Megadeth and they tell the story themselves.  Metallica and Megadeth have ...

L3 UNIT 7: Preparing for specialist study

Podcast name: Fleetwood Mac - Go your own way Topic: The song "go your own way" Who did it feature? Hrishikesh Hirway and Lindsay Buckingham What did I enjoy about the podcast? I enjoyed listening to Lindsay Buckingham talk about his experiences in the band. I liked how he broke down every instrument in fine detail Was there anything I didn't enjoy? there wasn't much to be honest, a very solid listen What did I learn from the podcast? I learned about what Fleetwood Mac was like during the creation of the album "Rumors". I also learned about isolated vocals and harmonising Were there any ideas in the podcast that i would consider using in my podcast? using a lot of music to illustrate what he is talking about.  My podcast will be about Thrash metal and the bands that inspired me to become the musician I am today. It will mainly discuss the history between Metallica and Megadeth and how they both rose to fame despite being their biggest rivals For my podcast...

L3 Unit 1 Assignment

Image
For this here assignment I created a track in logic using the following features Bussing MIDI Software instruments Logic loops Automation Basic use of effects (reverb, delay) I started of dead slow, I couldn't figure out where to start and I couldn't seem to get the ball rolling but once I got going its was as easy as anything.  Here is the song in full Here are the drop in and fade in effects I used for the guitar and monkey noises Here are the stereos for the tracks I used. Also highlighted in this is the bussing feature I used This is the MIDI instrument I used to create the ending to this track. I just played a simple piano thing and got this The track is very rudimentary as I used the bare minimum required to complete this assignment. I was familiar with the logic drummer and made sure I put it to good, simplistic, and effective use in this track. I let the drums drag out until the end of the track which led to it being 2 minutes long which was a lazy strategy but it worke...
