L3 Unit 5 and 6 Evaluation

This unit was probably the biggest challenge for me. I had to write a song, (which my band already did for our performance units) Rehearse it, record it in the studio, mix and EQ the song, then using the most frustrating and confusing software, shoot and create a music video for the song itself. It has taken a good while, but I am pleased with the end result.

Writing and Mixing

Writing the song a couple of months ago was fantastic, I was happy with how we performed it on stage and we have also sped the song up to around 150BPM. Making it in the studio was enjoyable as well but for future studio sessions, I would probably want a live in studio version as it would be far easier to mix. I cannot wait to bring songs like Corrosion of the mind and our self titled track into the studio. Mixing the song was fun in parts, I did better than I thought I would but I am confident that my other bandmates have made better mixes and music videos.

Shooting and making the music video

We spent time recording the music video around various places in the college, and everyone got some very cool and epic shot/clips of themselves. Once Misu transferred the video files to me, the real problems began to arise. Adobe Premiere Pro was unbelievably confusing at first, whilst our class did have a lecture on how to use the application, it all felt too fast and too much information all at once. Trying to operate premier pro was like trying to decipher Chinese writing. Regardless these confusions, I kept plugging away and I eventually figured out how to work premiere pro and got the music video finished.

What could have been better?

I think I definitely skimped on the effects that Adobe Premiere Pro had to offer. Even with a small amount of research on how to work Premiere Pro, I could have vastly improved the quality of my Music Video. In some clips, the instruments are out of time and there is definitely a lack of clips for our charming bass player. I would also be remiss if I didn't acknowledge the improvement that could have been done on my mix itself. The bass is too low, Polly's guitar doesn't feel as present in the mix, the guitars could definitely have been EQ'd better, and my vocals could definitely have been made to sound better. I know I am no Bruce Dickinson, but I gave it my all when it came to my vocals and i think they will sound better on my future tracks.

All of this was simply a learning experience for my up coming EP for Unit 8 and I can apply the things here to make my EP as energetic, enthusiastic, and well made as I can.
