Unit 3: Individual Choice
"Wake Up Dead" is the opening track by Megadeth's second album "Peace sells.. but who's buying?" The band lineup consists of Dave Mustaine on Guitar and Vocals, Dave Ellefson on Bass, Gar Samuelson on Drums, and Chris Poland on Guitar. The song is played in E standard tuning and is played at around 160 BPM for a majority of the song. The lyrics and the meaning behind the song are all about Dave Mustaine coming home from a night out with the boys at 4AM and trying not to wake a particular girl in the house implied in the lyrics " i sneak in my own house, its four in the morning, i've had too much to drink, said i was out with the boys. i sneak in my bedroom, and slip in the bed, i know if i wake her i'll wake up dead." The song opens with a short drum and bass lick then the intro begins with a simple guitar riff with power chords on A5 and C5 followed by F#5 and D5 then E5, F5, A5. Mustaine then does a guitar solo whilst the rest of the instruments do the same thing. The song then transitions into the main riff of the song where Dave Mustaine uses a technique he made up called a "Spider Chord" which involves playing a power chord on the A string then your other two fingers play a power chord on the E string making your hand look like spider which is how it got its name. The song then bridges into a new section where Mustaine goes into another solo as the guitars follow the chords G#5, F#5, B5, F#5, G#5. After the solo is done the song then goes into a bridge where the guitars play another riff which involves galloping along the E string and performing unique guitar licks as the drums follow a simple beat. Mustaine's vocals then come back into the song with a short quote that goes "Ooh, I wonder, will she find out, About the other, Other lover, Diana?" the tempo of the song then changes up with a BPM of around 115. the Vocals repeat the line "Wake up Dead" 4 different time with backing vocals singing (you, die!)
