UNIT: 3 Whats Going On

"What's Going On" by Marvin Gaye is the opening track from the 1971 album by the same name. The instrumentation of this song includes Drums + congas on top, Bass, Alto Saxophone, Guitar, Vibraphone, Backing vocals (humming chords) Lead Vocals (doubled) Chorus adds strings + Fingerpops. the chords of this song are Emaj7, C#m7, F#m7, A/B, B13, Am7, and Bm7. The tempo is at 100 BPM and is in the key of E major. The lyrics describe an incident of police brutality witnessed by a member of the Motown vocal group, Renaldo Benson. The song uses an 8 bar block but not any old 8 bar block, It switches between chords whilst in the verse. The Melody has a jazzy kind of feel to it and the backing vocals contribute a lot to the melody. The rhythm seems to have a calming breeze to it and a warm sense of relaxation, it appears to repeat itself throughout a majority of the song which keeps at around the same tempo. The chorus uses the exact same chords as the verse which is unique as they switch between F#m7 and A/B, then Emaj7 and C#m7, then 8 bars of Am7 and 4 bars of A/B. The instrumentation is relatively sophisticated and it brings new things into the song by using intricate chords and a bassline which essentially drives the rhythm and often goes crazy by blasting out lots of cool notes.
