 Introduction to Lead sheets 

Why should we write our songs down?  

  1. So we don't forget them 

  1. To expand upon them easier 

  1. To share it with a band so everyone can have an input 

  1. If there's only one version, its harder to make mistakes e.g. getting the structure wrong. 

How do we write it down? 

  1. Write down the chords and lyrics 

  1. Use or write a tab online 

  1. Write down the structure of the song 

  1. Time signature (how many beats are in a bar) 

 

How do other people write their songs down? 



What information is included in the lead sheet 

  1. The chords 

  1. The structure 

  1. Bar lines 

  1. Repeats ( one bar repeats % and whole section repeats :|| ) 

  1. The song name and artist 

Common symbols Key 

| - bar line 

|| - double bar line 

|: - repeat this section :| 

% - repeat previous bar 

|////| - number of beats in a bar. 

(Chord symbols count as one beat) e.g. 

|A///| % |  G///|%| 

Or 

|A/G/|%|G/D/|%|
