UNIT 5: Individual Practice
The best way to practice guitar for me is to learn new songs and riffs and learn the songs all the way through and correct any mistakes as we go along. When i practise i don't usually set a time limit for myself, i just practise for as long as i like which in my opinion isn't sustainable so moving forward when i get my electric guitar i will be practising for longer periods of time approximately 1 or 2 hours of learning new songs to benefit my skills.
The best things to practise are the things i struggle the most at. i find that there is no point in practising things i can easily play, instead i should challenge myself to play stuff that will help me excel. With regards to using a metronome i never use a metronome when practising but i feel like i should in the future because it will help with timing and learning more about tempo in general.
Before i practise a warm is always helpful, so in case of this i usually practise the pentatonic scale starting on the 12th fret of the E string then work my way down the fret board. I also practise chords from time to time, so just going between random chords can help with transitions from one chord to another. I'm not great with ear training and recognising notes and chords by just listening to them so i think i should learn more about that. The sounds that i produce on guitar are either acoustic, electric clean, or distorted guitar tone.
To improve at guitar i believe and have been told that my technique isn't great and must change to see any real improvement. Like most hobbies/activities, if something is not working then something needs to change and i will look to find a new technique which works well for me. A strategy to improve my playing is learning new chords that make up new songs. Now i have my electric guitar, chords will become easier as you don't have to press down onto the strings as hard as you do on an acoustic. If i keep playing guitar and keep playing gigs, my skills and technique will improve. You don't run when you're born, you've got to crawl before you can run.
