1. Industry Roles

Forensic Musicologist

Stage Pyrotechnics

A pyrotechnician is someone who organises a set of flashy explosives or flammable liquids during a show for big effect. This can do music concerts but they also specialise in firework displays.

A day in the life of a pyrotechnician would include a vast range of planning and meticulous focus on planning, setting up, safety execution, and teardown. The setting up would include inventory and loading, site inspections and permits, rigging and wiring, system programming, and safety checks and rehearsals. During the show they would have to be in charge of a range of different things such as monitoring and operation, and safety oversight. After the show is finished, they will have to endure long hours of cleaning up and storing items away to be sent back to the warehouse. A very demanding job to say the least.

The annual salary of a pyrotechnician is around £31,000 a year in the UK but in the US the wage is around $54,000 a year

The skills required to become a pyrotechnican include a comprehensive understanding of compounds, chemistry, and physics. Equipment proficiency is also really important along with computer literacy and troubleshooting. Making sure nothing goes wrong and having a deep understanding of safety precautions are really important skills in order to becoming a pyrotechincian

The qualifications you need in order to become a pyrotechnician involves a training course such as The
British Pyrotechnics Association (BPA) who run courses intended for firers. You need to be at least 18 to be a technical assistant or 21 to be a full on Pyrotechnican

The first step to gaining employment as a pyrotechnician is to firstly, gain some experience in the respective role as a technical assistant or helper. Secondly, starting a training course is very important as having no qualifications may not get you anywhere. After completing your training, you will have free reign to find jobs within the business. Getting involved with bands or musical artists who wish to have pyrotechnics in their show may help gain you employment and make you an offical Pyrotechnican for musical concerts

2. Professional Practice

Safety precautions in music

To improve my practice sessions as a musician, I feel like I should focus on my weakness which are Lack or soloing inspiration - as a guitarist I feel like my solos are lame and not as good as I'd want them to be so to combat this, I plan on learning brand new scales to become better at shredding. I will name three scales I could learn to get better at shredding

The 7 different modes of scales

Major Pentatonic scale
This scale can be played at any position on the fret board. For example if the rhythm guitarist is playing a riff in the key of E, The lead guitarist will play a solo in the same key resulting in the E Pentatonic Major scale

Phrygian scale

The harmonic minor scale

C melodic minor scale

Practising with a metronome is really important. Though I have done it in the past, I will plan to do more of it in the future.

A big part of being a professional is taking your chances when you get them. So if a band offers you a gig and you leave it too late, that opportunity may not come back.

3. Local Rehearsal Venues

Bunkhouse
The bunkhouse is one of Swanseas biggest music venues and supports the local scene very well. They have rehearsals on the main stage before the live acts begin in the evening which gives you great experience for being on a stage since you're actually rehearsing on a stage.

Pros:

You get experience on the stage
Networking with other people in the music scene and becoming familiar with the people in it
Local venue
They provide a drum kit for the drummer

Cons:

It's upstairs so you have to carry stuff upstairs
May not always be available
Rehearsal times may not last long because of pre booked gigs

Sound Haven

Sound Haven is a rehearsal venue in the SA1 region where you can simply go in and get set up with minimum fuss. The owner is friendly and has good networking.

Pros:

Easy to set up in there
You know how much time you'll have in there as there is a clock on the wall
The networking in there is pretty good as loads of local bands like to rehearse in there

Cons:
It's a little bit hard to find but once you find it you know where it is
The area is very discreet so getting there might be a bit complicated
The rooms might be a little packed depending on the size of your band

Newid Studios

Newid Studios is a rehearsal space in Llanelli which also includes recording sessions and DIY Recording.

Pros:

Multiple recording sectors
Very cheap to hire
Lots of information online about it

Cons:
